July 2008
HOWDY!! I have been granted the ability to return to full service by my doctor and am glad to state that pathology reports show all clear. I consider myself very lucky to have gotten through a Clark’s class 4 malignant melanoma. I would like to personally thank Dr. Paul Ward and his staff at West Front Primary Care of Traverse City for finding the suspicious mole on my back. Without a yearly physical, the results would have much been different. Also thanks to Dr. Vanderkolk and staff at Surgical Associates of Traverse City. Thanks to the staff of Munson Medical Center for they’re professionalism helping me through this ordeal. Once again, wear sunscreen, take care of yourself and get a physical yearly.

Now to feeshin!! Hey the water temps in Lake Michigan are starting to rebound and so are the kings. Creel census people have been sharing info with me along with charter reports that the fishing is getting better.

The inland lakes at this point are or have experienced a caddis hatch in the last week. Thus the fishing has been a little slow. We are still taking walleyes and bass on some of the larger inland lakes. Numbers are good and the water is cool enough yet to provide some good hits. Crawlers on harnesses with spin blades from Fishlander in various colors have been the hottest fished suspended over 15-20 feet of water 8-12 feet deep. One of the fish caught and kept had a belly full of mayflies. This means until the hatch is over the fishing will be a little less apt to hit. So improve your presentation, lower the leader or line weight to allow for a stealthier approach. Live baits or smaller stick baits and Hot N Tots have been good for us trolling.

We now offer guided trips on the Manistee River from Hodenpyle Dam to Tippy Dam and from Tippy Dam to the mouth of the Manistee River. We have received a U.S. Forest service permit, #547, that allows myself and my partner, Pilot Phil Mohr, to offer some of the finest trout, steelhead and salmon fishing to be had anywhere in the continental United States. We feel the opportunity to do this is a life long dream come true and deservers our best effort. We have a 16 ft. Hyde drifter and a 20 ft. SeaArk jet sled to offer for these trips at $300.00 for 2, $350.00 for 3 and $400.00 for 4 people. Our licensing also includes State of Michigan permits for the Betsie and Jordan Rivers.

During the summer months the SeaArk is also a licensed charter boat for Great Lakes use for trolling near shore for browns, coho and steelhead on smoother days when a larger boat is not needed. The same boat does inland trips for walleye, bass and northern pike.

The charter boat has been upgraded with new electronics and is now ready for service.

We have what you want! A fishing service that offers fly, spin and troll fishing on inland lakes and streams to Great Lakes trolling. Just think, you could catch as many as 20 different species of fish in a 3 day session with our guide service. Holly Waaaaa!!!

Thanks, Capt. Mike...

Charter trips start in May:
     •  $400.00 for half day, 4-6 hours or limit
     •  $750.00 for 6am to 5pm or limit
     •  $275.00 for after work specials, 6pm - 10pm

Drift boat drips are $300.00 for 1 or 2 people all day or limit. October, November and December then again March through April.

Inland waters for Bass, Walleye and Northern Pike, May through October, $300.00 for 2 people.

Charter trips are aboard a 24ft Crestliner cuddy with 4 downriggers, 2 planer boards and 2 dipsy rods. The boat is DNR licensed and inspected and the Captain is a US Coast Guard / Merchant Marine Captain licensed to 50 tons. The boat has a cell phone for emergency use only plus ship to shore radio. The Captain is required to be Red Cross trained and certified in first aid and CPR.

Drift trips are aboard a 16ft Hyde drift boat. All rods and baits are provided. The drift boat is designed and built for river use and sits on the water more than in the water. The boat is generally rowed from hole to hole and set up for fly casting or drift style fishing with live baits or spawn. The guide has 30 plus years of experience at steelhead fishing and has been a licensed inland pilot in the State of Michigan for 15 years. As I have expressed before, drift fishing is almost an angelic experience if you don't get out much. It is very peaceful. The setting of being out on river with all the wildlife and then hooking up to a 10 plus pound steelhead gets your blood pumping.

The inland / river boat is a 20ft aluminum boat made for bass, walleye, northern pike and steelhead fishing. Long and wide it is very stable can travel up to 60 mph from hole to hole but also trolls nicely. All rod's and equipment are provide.
